STARTING XI
REMAINING SQUAD MEMBERS
3 best players not in squad:
Denmark won the European Championship in 1992, and had their best result at a World Cup in 1998, reaching the quarter-finals. They actually have the most players in this squad from the 80's though, when they reached the semi-finals of the 1984 Euros. They had 4 European Cup winners from this era (Nielsen, Molby, Heintze, Lerby), Preben Elkjaer, who finished 2nd and 3rd in the Balon D'Or, and Morten Olsen, their greatest ever centre-back who made Euros Team of the Tournament in 1984. Daniel Agger just missed out at centre-back. Sivebæk can cover as a right and left-back in the squad, so there was no need for Johnny Hansen. I originally chose a 4-2-3-1 formation to fit the best players in, with Michael Laudrup playing next to Pilmark in midfield, but it didn't make the best use of him. I chose the diamond formation to play him further up the pitch, without having to drop Simonsen or Elkjaer. Molby and Karl Aage Hansen are enough to cover the deeper midfield 3, while Jensen can be Michael Laudrup's back-up further up the pitch. Jorgensen and Nielsen can then be the back-up striker options. The final two spots went to the two best players not yet included in Karl Aage Praest and John Angelo Hansen, with Hansen just ahead of Frank Arnesen. Brian Laudrup and Praest can be wide options in the squad.
