4 of Uruguay's 1930 World Cup winners and 5 from the famous 1950 winners make the team. Only Godin, Valverde, Suarez and Cavani make it as players who primarily played in the 21st Century, although Suarez has possibly become the nation's greatest ever player. He is probably the greatest ever South American player outside of Brazil and Argentina. Victor and Jose Andrade could be the equivalent of defensive-midfielders or full-backs in the modern game. It made sense to play them at full-back to make space for Goncavles and Varela in midfield, and they both had to attacking qualities needed for this diamond formation. Nasazzi can cover as a back-up right-back if needed. Montero was chosen as a fourth centre-back, just ahead of Hugo De Leon, Atilio Ancheta and Dario Pereyra. Valverde is cover for the deeper lying midfield spots - he has surpassed Schubert Gambetta. Rocha is back-up for Schiaffino in attacking midfield, who has licence to attack with the two behind him. Choosing back-up options for the front three was difficult. I knew Romano was already going to be Francescoli's back-up, because he was the most suitable left-wing option for the squad too. Petrone, Forlan and Cavani were the remaining striking options, meaning Jose Piendibene and Fernando Morena had to just miss out. Ghiggia makes it as the final spot as a right-wing option, narrowly ahead of Luis Cubilla.
