STARTING XI
REMAINING SQUAD MEMBERS
3 best players not in the squad:
7 of the chosen starting XI played for Peru in the 1970's. This was an excellent period for them, in which they won the 1975 Copa America (their only one since 1939) and qualified for two World Cups, where they had their best results of reaching the quarter-finals. Honores narrowly made it as the third goalkeeper in the squad ahead of Rafael Asca, while Delgado was close to making the starting XI ahead of Melendez. Victor Benitez can act as a 4th centre-back, as well as an extra midfield option if needed. Castillo, Terry and Uribe can be the back-up options for the rest of the midfield diamond. I considered bringing Terry into the starting XI for one of the forwards so Cubillas can play at the tip of the diamond, but I was hesitant to drop any of the attackers, especially when Cueto already gives Cubillas attacking license. Seminaro and Lopez can be the back-up options upfront, before Munante makes it as my final pick as a right-wing option for the squad.
