STARTING XI
REMAINING SQUAD MEMBERS
3 best players not in the squad:
7 of the chosen starting XI played for Peru in the 1970's. This was an excellent period for them, in which they won the 1975 Copa America (their only one since 1939) and qualified for 2 World Cups, where they had their best result of reaching the quarter-final. The margins between all three goalkeepers was close. Andres Bedoya missed out to Solano as a back-up right-back option, while on the other side, either left-back in the squad could have starter. Victor Benitez can act as a 4th centre-back, as well as an extra midfield option if needed. Castillo, Terry and Uribe can be the back-up options for the rest of the midfield diamond. Roberto Challe and Ramon Mifflin were not far from making it here. I considered bringing Terry into the starting XI for one of the forwards so Cubillas can play at the tip of the diamond, but I was hesitant to drop Fernandez as the only natural striker in the lineup, especially when Cueto already gives Cubillas reasonable attacking license. Seminaro and Lopez can be the back-up options upfront ahead of Alejandro Villanueva, Jorge Alcalde and Claudio Pizarro, before Munante makes it as the final pick as a right-wing option for the squad. Other wide options in Oscar Gomez Sanchez, Juan Carlos Oblitas, Jefferson Farfan and Geronimo Barbadillo couldn't make the squad. Players by Decade: 1970's (6), 1960's (5), 1950's (4), 1930's (3), 1980's (2), 2010's (1), 1990's (1), 1940's (1) |
