STARTING XI
REMAINING SQUAD MEMBERS
3 best players not in the squad:
Prior to the Serbian national team, if a player was born in Serbia and played only for the Yugoslavia national team, then I considered them here. Montenegrin born players, such as Savicevic and Mijatovic, weren't considered. 5 players make this squad from the Serbia and Montenegro / FR Yugoslavia side that reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2000, and the last 16 of the 1998 World Cup. Stojanovic earned his spot as 3rd goalkeeper from his performances at Red Star Belgrade, particularly in the European Cup winning season of 90-91. However, he never played for the Yugoslavia national team, but I struggled to find many better options. Dragoje Levkovic made the 1990 World Cup squad ahead of him, but his club career didn't seem worthy of inclusion here in comparision. The centre-back pairing of Vasovic and Vidic is one of the strongest of any nation. However, there was a lack of strong options at left-back, so I chose Mihajlovic there. Matic can cover Acimovic's holding midfield position (narrowly ahead of Milorad Arsenijevic), while Stankovic and Petrovic cover the other midfield 2. Tirnarnic can be an extra wide option in the squad - Kostic is capable of playing on both sides. Mitic and Marjanovic are the remaining options upfront. Forward Milan Galic is sometimes considered as a Serbian, but he was born in Bosnia and only played for the Yugoslavia national team, so wasn't included here.
